Timing belt training - Norway

Erembodegem – 52 Snap Drive technicians attended a series of technical seminars about belt inspection procedures and fault diagnosis earlier this month.  Gates organised these training evenings together with its direct distributor-partner Sorensen & Balchen.  The 52 mechanics attending, presenting 11 of the 18 SnapDrive garages from the main Norwegian cities, were very enthusiastic about the training.  By attending the training and using Gates PowerGrip® belts in combination with the STT-1 sonic belt tension tester, the garages have been qualified as official Gates workshops.  Training to the remaining garages are planned for the fall.

Norwegian SnapDrive technicians and proprietors were invited, to hear how careless handling of belts and incorrect tensions at installation could play critical roles in engine failure, with expensive consequences for the vehicle owner.  The success was huge.  The mechanics were very enthusiastic to get all the necessary advice and tips to ensure trouble free belt installation and maintenance.

The training sessions all included an informative session on belt inspection procedures and fault diagnosis and a discussion about timing belt replacement schedules. Vehicle types and engines that need specific caution got extra attention.  The evenings concluded with a demonstration of how the employment of a belt tension testing tool - such as the STT-1 sonic tension tester from Gates - can accurately measure belt tension.
”Timing belt tensions can vary as a result of differences in the type of engine, the drive layout and the engine performance required. Because it is no longer feasible to make manual assessments of the tension of the timing belt, the availability of the Gates Sonic Tension Tester, the STT-1, means that accurate tension is possible every time," explains Stefan Sôderberg, District Sales Manager for Gates Nordic and Baltic Countries.

By attending the training and using Gates PowerGrip® belts in combination with the STT-1, the garages have been qualified as official Gates workshops.  “Throughout 2005 we plan to meet all SnapDrive garages and certify them as official Gates workshops”, Stefan Sôderberg continues.
