Application Engineer

Gates Fluid Power Division is a major international company specializing in the production of Hydraulic Hose, Couplings, tube assemblies and hose assemblies   for the industrial markets. Our continuing success has resulted in the following challenging opportunity in our Gates Hydraulics, St. Neots plant.

As a Fluid Power Application Engineer reporting directly to the Hydraulic Systems and Field Engineering Manager you are primarily responsible for:

  • Provide product application engineering services to assigned strategic OEM customers and distributor clients in the proper application and selection of hydraulic, industrial & Engine conveyance products
  • Investigate applications and provide best solutions with existing products
  • Support the implementation of the Customer Alignment Model by developing strong engineering relationships within assigned key accounts
  • Guide product development in creating new best solution products when existing Gates products cannot handle the application requirements
  • Support the Product Commercialization Process on key divisional projects, especially on P2P concept, in this area, being a strong part of a team which includes Purchasing, Production Engineering and Manufacturing, Costing, Samples Management

In addition, providing progress reports on a monthly basis.  Dedicated OE customers in Europe will be assigned and there will be a need to coordinate projects for specific customers shared by other Application Engineers.

This role will highlight key development and manufacturing activities which will necessitate working closely together with Sales, Business development, Technical centers located in St Neots as well as the CSC, Denver.  They will establish Test Centre requirements and define test/measurement programs in line with customer and/or internal specifications.

Travel is dictated by business conditions, usually 30% of the time in the field calling on OEM engineers, prospects, or working with distributors/customers. Applicants must be able to perform physical elements associated with the job, including inspecting our product in difficult locations as required to properly understand and service our OEM customers.

Required Skills/Experience:

A Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent and/or considerable relevant experience with proven technical ability

Experience ideally to include product applications, with preference given to Gates experience and/or knowledge of our Fluid Power product line

A mechanical aptitude is essential as is a current driving license

Must be self-motivated and able to plan/organize own work schedule to work independently

Excellent communication skills are essential and the ability to interact effectively with customers, distributors and colleagues alike
