Gates builds new Power Transmission facility in Izmir

Izmir – Gates Corporation will build a new Power Transmission facility in Izmir, Turkey. On May 27 an official ceremony will take place to inaugurate the site and officially start the construction of the plant. This ceremony will be attended by representatives of the Aegean Free Zone, the Aegean Free Zone Development & Operating Company (ESBAS), Customs authorities, local dignitaries and of course Gates Corporation and Tomkins senior management.
Izmir offers a strategic location for Gates from which to further grow markets to the West, East and Middle East, and access to a large, entrepreneurial workforce with a long history as a trading nation. The company expects the new plant to be operational early 2010 and plans on a workforce of over 100 associates by 2012.
Gates Powertrain Izmir will support the fast-growing demand for oil pumps and tensioners in Europe. Gates is a worldleading manufacturer of automatic tensioners, each customised to meet the most severe and precise system requirements for tension, vibration, damping, inertia and alignment on specific engine accessory drives. Due to stricter emission standards and requirements for lower fuel consumption the demand for oil pumps is still increasing.  The Izmir facility will manufacture high-tech variable oil pumps which offer fuel economies of 2 to 3%. Gates supplies these and other power transmission products worldwide to virtually all major car manufacturers and to the aftermarket.
“Turkey is a dynamic geographic region that has a skilled workforce as well as a strong supply base”, says Gordon Hensley, Director of Powertrain – Europe.  “Expanding into Turkey allows Gates to meet the product and service needs of the growing European automotive markets”, he continues.
