UPM maintenance engineers trained in Hydraulic Safety

St Neots - Shotton Paper, a UPM facility located in Flintshire north-eastern Wales, have the capacity to produce 500,000 tonnes of standard newsprint paper annually.  To ensure that Shotton Paper have the ability to meet their ongoing production requirements for the two paper mills, planned maintenance is an essential function of the dedicated maintenance team.  In addition, the correct selection and safe installation of the appropriate components is a fundamental requirement of all members of the maintenance team. As such, the Safe Hydraulics training offered by Gates Authorised Safe Hydraulics trainers was eagerly introduced by Steve Dickinson, the sites Maintenance Engineer for Mechatronics.

Gates’ Safe Hydraulics programme consists of the following training & certification modules:

  • Correct hose & coupling selection and overview of the most common international terminations 
  • Hose assembly and the requirements of the European Machinery Directive 
  • Hose cleanliness 
  • Assembly installation and protection 
  • Ongoing inspection and preventive maintenance 
  • Hose and coupling troubleshooting: identification of the most common hydraulic hose and coupling failures and their root causes 
  • Crimper maintenance

The completion of the Safe Hydraulics training at Shotton Paper, in conjunction with the use of Gates integrated product range will ensure a safe working environment, while helping to achieve the required reduction in downtime.
