Gates supplies belts and hose to 'European Car of the Year' : Ford Focus

Last November the Ford Focus won the ‘European Car of the Year’ award. Gates was again selected as supplier of belts and hose for the new Focus, after successful co-operation on former models. The Ford Focus is equipped with a timing belt, an accessory drive belt, automatic tensioners and oil cooler supply and return hoses for diesel engines, all manufactured by Gates.

Gates not only supplies belts and hoses but is also capable of developing complete engine drive systems. This was a convincing argument in the selection of suppliers for the new Focus. Gates offers excellent price/quality ratio and improved belt quality. Gates also supplies automatic tensioners that eliminate the need for manual tensioning.

As substantially lowered noise level had to be one of the main assets of the new Ford Focus engine range. That is why Gates engineers developed a noisefree accessory drive system. The system’s oil pump is driven directly from the front of the crankshaft. The water and power steering pumps, alternator and optional airconditioning compressor are driven by a durable and maintenance free belt. The upper camshafts are equipped with a reinforced timing belt, an automatic spring-loaded tensioner and a mechanical damper.

Joint efforts on a global scale

Gates’ manufacturing and research facilities are strategically located near those of the main car manufacturers. The result is successful co-operation on a worldwide scale. This also applies to the co-operation between Gates and Ford. The Ford Focus development engineers are based in Germany and the UK. The assembly is done in Saarlouis (Germany) and Valencia (Spain). Gates has facilities in the same areas, which results in a smooth co-operation especially when it comes to research and the supply of Gates products.

In Europe, Gates is the sole supplier of Micro-V® components for all Ford Focus petrol engine types:

  • Gates Aachen (Germany) supplies automatic tensioners for the 1.8 and 2.0 Zetec engines and the 1.4 and 1.6 Zetec SE engines.  
  • Gates Balsareny (Spain) supplies synchronous and Micro-V® belts for the Zetec SE engine.  
  • Gates Dumfries (UK) supplies synchronous belts.  
  • Gates Erembodegem (Belgium) supplies Micro-V® belts for the Zetec engine.

Zetec engines are also used in the Ford Focus models produced in North America and their respective components are supplied by the Gates facilities located in Elisabethtown in Kentucky (supplies Micro-V® belts), Windsor in Ontario (supplies tensioners) and Moncks Corner in South Carolina (supplies timing belts).

Quality is rewarded

Since the beginning of the ’80s, Gates has been involved in a number of leading Ford projects, such as the launch of the Mondeo, Fiesta and Puma. Moreover, Gates’ facilities in Aachen (Germany), Balsareny and Sant Just (Spain), Dumfries and St Neots (UK) and Erembodegem (Belgium) received the Ford-Q1 quality rating. As a consequence, Gates can be counted among Ford’s limited group of preferred suppliers.
